Courage

Many of us have the same thoughts as this blogger. We love our jobs and wouldn’t dream of doing anything else, but the challenges outlined here cannot be ignored without impacting the future success of both the program and (more importantly) our students.

By Nancy Niessen

I had drafted the following blog post but was hesitant to work on refining it for publication. It’s a topic on the minds of many FDK educators but it’s not one that a lot of us discuss publicly for various reasons (e.g. not wanting to be perceived as complaining or negative, not wanting to focus on the problems in our programs, a feeling of helplessness – that speaking up won’t matter).

Today I was at the BECS conference at Charles Sturt University along with many talented educators from across the province. These dedicated people gave up their Saturday because of their commitment to their students and their own learning. I witnessed many acts of bravery throughout the day – presenters talking openly about their new thinking, educators sharing their learning journeys including issues they struggle with in their programs. More than once I heard devoted, cutting edge…

The Early Childhood STEM Classroom

This is a beautiful reflection. It gives me inspiration to restructure my classroom!

Hi All,

First off I want to Thank Amy for getting us going on this challenge and for all the work she put in coordinating and organizing this fabulous event! Doing a straight up post about  classroom curriculum is a refreshing departure for me, so here goes!

The Early Childhood STEM Classroom

When I first started teaching Kindergarten, the “master teacher” had our science curriculum all worked out. We measured the apple, counted the seeds, decided which kind of apple we “liked best” in a taste test and graphed it in the packet. Unit 1, done. Next up, pumpkins. We hugged it, measured it, scooped it and counted the seeds again. Unit 2, check. By January, for science, the kids had filled out two fill-in-the-blank packets, ate some apples and hugged a pumpkin.

To me, this wasn’t science. I knew from my friendships with actual, practicing scientists that what they did…

What Infant teachers want parents to know – Reading levels | Creating A Learning Environment

This is a great blog post which explains the how and why of home/school reading strategies with your kindergarten child.  I love how the author reminds you that reading at home should be enjoyable and easy.  Leave the hard stuff for school and don’t compare children to each other.

original-1706080-1.jpgHello Everyone!

First, thanks for joining me on my TPT journey!  In the past month, over 40 new people have generously clicked on that little green star and are the newest “Kindergarten Forever” followers.  Welcome!

I’ve been busy behind the scenes with some new products and some new marketing.  My products are getting rePinned on Pinterest at a wonderful rate and many of you have shared those pins with your colleagues.  Again, Thanks!

If you are here, you already know that I started a blog:  https://kindergartenforever.wordpress.com   Make sure you subscribe and get some tips on my new products as well as a post about the benefits of submitting feedback on TPT.

I have also started a Facebook page for those of you (like me) who are addicted to that form of social media.  Come on over and “LIKE” my page for some great shares.  You will be the first to hear any major announcements and see new products  https://www.facebook.com/KindergartenForever

Finally, I’ve been busy posting some products to save you money!  I bundled all of my Spring Alphabet Matching products to save you over 25% off the individual purchase price.  Click Here for the Bundle

I have added a few more bundles too.  They are easy to find on my store, just look for the $$Money Saving Bundles$$ link on the left side of the page.

Finally, I am working on some new checklists and tracking sheets for the Ontario Curriculum for grades 1-3.  They will be similar to my Kindergarten Checklists so if you know any primary teachers, be sure to get them to follow me too and be the first to benefit from these great new tools.

Stay tuned for some more exciting announcements very soon.  Also, hop back to TPT and get your feedback credits.  You never know when they may come in handy!

Have Fun!

Freezing in February!

I know, I live in Canada.  I’m supposed to be used to this weather, but this is truly crazy!!!  Today, the temperature with the wind feels like -40C.  For those of you in the USA, that also means -40F.  The point at which our thermometers meet.  The sun is shining with deception.  It is no match for the wind.  Skin will freeze in minutes.

So, I decided to ditch the winter and think spring!  I made a bundle of 6 spring products and that didn’t warm me up enough, so I am making some summer items!  I don’t know if they will sell, but they make me feel better on this cold day.

How do you stay warm?

Documenting in Kindergarten

If you are like me, you are constantly taking notes, taking pictures and documenting the life out of your day!  Administration always wants to see the “proof” behind your grades.

Last year I discovered the joys of “Evernote” (which I will leave for another post) and this year I have created a tool that is saving my bacon!

Using and “At-A-Glance” tracking sheet is easy.  It is just a sheet with your student’s names on it with places to write your little notes (no more post-it notes everywhere!).  What I’ve added is every expectation in the Ontario Kindergarten Curriculum document.  So now, I can grab my “Science” sheet and make sure my little learners are meeting the expectations needed to succeed in the program and add notes as to how (or why not).

Show this package to your Principal.  Maybe they will buy it for you! 😉

School is Closed! Best Parody Ever!

Living in a very snowy part of Ontario, Canada, we get more than our share of the white stuff.  While it is too hazardous many days for the busses to travel, the majority of our school population walks to school, we we are almost never “closed”.  It has only happened once in my career and it was because of a really nasty storm

However, I love this parody for two reasons.  #1 – I’m always making an impromptu “Let It Go” parody on almost any subject with my students and #2 – I think it really captures the wonderment for everyone when school is closed!

Please stay warm and enjoy this little gem:
